Microsoft Search Server 2008 takes about an hour for setting up. It features a well built interface. As with SharePoint search, Express respected various types of security. During indexing, Access Control Lists (ACLs) are captured for content residing in file shares, SharePoint sites, and IBM Lotus Notes databases. Bottom line: it is fast to set up, easy to use and customize, and capable of producing reliable results. It’s tempting – but unfair – to characterize Search Server 2008 Express as a “Trojan Horse” that you’ll quickly outgrow.

Google MiniGoogle Inc. has upgraded its Mini enterprise search tool, including new capabilities to improve the relevance of results and extend the reach of the product. The Mini is Google’s lower end search appliance for firms looking to search up to 300,000 documents. The latest version includes the ability to search files and documents stored on shared drives, and support for six more languages - Basque, Catalan, Galician, Greek, Hungarian, and Polish. Google Mini also features new technology which allows users to sort results by date or source.

Google has begun experimenting with a new cross-language ability for its Search Appliance, a server customers can use to power their in-house search service. Many of our enterprise search customers have dozens of offices all over the world with tens of millions documents indexed in a host of different languages. Cross-Language Enterprise Search instantly translates your Google Search Appliance query from one language to one or more other languages using Google’s best-in-class translation engine. Existing customers can try the feature by downloading it through Google Enterprise Labs.
